Opening its doors to the New York City community in 1984, Animal General has established a thriving veterinary clinic and animal hospital within the Upper West Side of Manhattan. Conveniently located at the corner of Columbus Avenue and 87th Street, the veterinary facility is the brainchild of Dr. Paul Howell, who in a short time expanded his solo practice into a comprehensive staff of doctors, nurses, animal attendants, and other faculty. Throughout the clinic’s 25-plus years of providing top-notch veterinary services to cats, dogs, and the occasional local wildlife, Animal General has accumulated a loyal following of patron pet owners as well as a steady flow of new faces and wagging tails.
Awarded Employer of the Year in 1997 by NYSARC, Inc., Animal General has spent more than a decade in its efforts to match young adults with developmental disabilities to fulfilling positions in the field of animal care. In 1999, Animal General received the National Practice of Excellence Award—an honorable recognition granted to only 12 veterinary practices throughout the nation each year—from Veterinary Economics magazine.
Animal General is pleased to provide its four-legged patients with everyday services such as health and wellness checkups, as well as emergency room procedures and an intensive care unit. The clinic even offers counseling services to pet owners who may need assistance or advice in making difficult decisions for their pets. Visiting hours for animals admitted into the care of Animal General hospital run from 1 to 3 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. daily.
